Rockhopper Penguin

Filed under: Digital Painting — Tags: — Screenhog @ 6:17 pm

The art challenge at work for next Monday is to draw a penguin that is different than the penguins that we draw and see at work every day (if you know where I work, this will make a great deal of sense as being quite the challenge).

Instead of going the cartoony route, I decided to attempt a more realistic penguin using Photoshop. It’s a Rockhopper penguin, which is one of the coolest penguins due to its big yellow eyebrows. Here’s the result:

Estimated creation time: 2-3 hrs. Have I ever mentioned how amazed I am at artists who will work on the same painting for 50+ hours? I am in awe at that level of patience and dedication to getting every detail perfect. Unless I was attempting a wall mural or something, I don’t think I could do it.

Candle

This was one of the first digital paintings I did… or at least, one of the first ones that I ever attempted to make photo-realistic. While I don’t have an eye for the level of detail needed for photo-realism, I was happy enough with it that it became my avatar for awhile on a few online forums.

With Christmas here and everything, it seemed like an appropriate thing to post… candles seem to be one of my favorite symbols during Christmas.

Let your light shine.

Just say no…

Made this back in Oct. 2001. I’d still love to turn it into a T-shirt someday.

Don’t Touch That!

The subject for Monday’s art challenge at work was “Don’t Touch That!”. I had been playing with a concept in my head all week, but Sunday afternoon, I suddenly came up with a much better one to attempt to draw:
Deedee presses the button from Dexter's Lab
In case you don’t recognize it, these are the two main characters from the Cartoon Network show “Dexter’s Lab”. It was very unusual drawing in that style, but I went into it knowing I’d be breaking out of my comfort zone. I don’t think it’s quite good enough to actually be a frame from the show, but it’s close. At the very least, I was able to create pretty much exactly what I’d pictured in my head, which has to count for something.

Strange Walker

Filed under: Digital Painting — Tags: — Screenhog @ 5:09 pm

At work, we’ll sometimes have art challenges. There’s a wide variety of art challenges that we’ve done, but usually, the challenge is that every artist has to draw something based on an open-ended subject.

This week, the art challenge was “Strange Walkers“. I immediately thought of a neat concept for it, so that’s what I worked on today for two hours. My Photoshop skills are pretty rusty, so this gave me the perfect excuse to practice. It’s no masterpiece, but I’m pretty happy with it. (The photograph I used was a photo of a random residential area in England that I found on Google.)

Strange Walkers

Here’s the rough that I started with, if you’re interested (this only took about 2-3 minutes).
