Preparing to Recreate my Favorite Fable

Have you heard of Aesop’s fables? If you haven’t, you’ve probably at least heard of one of them… some of his more famous include “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “The Ant and the Grasshopper”. I like his style of creating moral lessons by making examples of the nature around him.

My favorite Aesop’s fable is “The Sun and the Wind”, and I’ve long wanted to make a comic based on it, so this week, I finally got down to it to try and design the characters:

These were my first drawings. The sun turned out well – I especially like the second drawing – but the cloud really didn’t appeal to me. He looks too muddy or sloshy or gloupy or something like that.

JiA #17 – Totem Pole

I made this one differently than the other Jellyfish In Armour comics. Having had the last two pictures as experience with inking directly onto paper, I drew and inked this on paper, scanned it in, used the Trace Bitmap function in Flash, and then colored it in Flash.

I mention this mainly because it means that this comic still counts for the 50 sketches challenge, but also because, if I can get this technique to work right, it could be how I do all Jellyfish in Armour from now on. I’m going to have to do a little fine-tuning, though, as Trace Bitmap still created a few extra jaggies from my scanned line art. (Click the comic to see the scanned image from my sketchbook.)

I drew this comic about a year and a half ago, and they are still some of my favourite dinosaurs I’ve ever drawn.

Heard a Christmas CD today. Bet you can guess what the very first song I heard was:

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the planes

Superman Vision

Fact 1: Lead crystal is made up of at least 20% lead.
Fact 2: Superman can not see through lead.
Question: Can Superman see through lead crystal?

This was a real conversation that came up at work about a month ago.
